I believe this to be a universal truth. That is, I have come to believe that any rational person blessed with the experience of experiencing and digesting an adequately large sample of available knowledge in our culture would reach these same conclusions.
We have created a world that is defined as a spiraling "race to
the bottom" both in physical and human qualities. The average physical and mental health of humans is deteriorating
when evaluated by any constand standard of measurement1, 2 There is no realistic political or scientific plan or
societal expectation that would halt this force. In other words, we
are doomed. Our most optimistic outlook for the future is that we will create new possibilities to sustain the race to the bottom and perhaps keep it out of focus.3
Our individual responsibility to live happy and productive lives
- even in the context of this understanding of the plight of humans
- is achieved by changing our paradigm of reference to one or both of the following:
- Narrowing our focus. For example, basing our experience on the perceived quality of emotions, food, sex, environment and relationships that we experience in the day-to-day.
- Expanding our focus. Learning to accept the position that we exist in a Universal or cosmic energy. Stated another way, that this is what is intended in God's plan.
Footnotes
1 My definition of
physical and mental health includes intellectual capacity, however
that may be defined. Measurement of these factors from any known standard necessarily gives
weight to historical acheivements and value positions rather than consider the
possibilities for the future. My reference point precludes the
possibility that a standard that may arise or evolve in the future
is a more appropriate point of reference. For example, if the human
race ultimately evolve into amoebas and the cosmic reference point
is that this is as intended by God or the Universal plan, then my
definition wound be wrong. Another example would be that if humans
eventually communicate with each other solely through transfer of
electronic messages, then a standard that measures a decline in
capability to create effective verbal communications would be
irrelevant.
2
My statement addresses only the overall population mean and is not
likely applicable to the highest performing members in each
category. This distinction highlights the trend that the average of
the highest and lowest groups in each category, however those groups
may be defined, are growing farther apart. The impact is most
visible in social unrest and increase in allocations to government
mandated entitlement spending.
3 For example,
advances in technology mask the fact that natural unassisted life span has shortened, human ability to cope with physical environment has deteriorated and we have degraded the
earth's natural resources necessary for human survival.
