Q: What's up with the "Fair Tax" proposal?
A: The proposal to replace the current tax system with a flat national sales tax seems to be dead at the end of 2005. Treasury Secretary John Snow will make tax reform recommendations to President Bush based on the results of an extensive advisory panel study that has been going on for months. The advisory panel did not embrace the flat tax proposal, and neither the Secretary nor the President are likely to mention it. This is unfortunate since the flat tax proposal has such strong support among almost every other source who weighed on the topic. In fact, it is fair to say that the Fair Tax has more public support than any other legislative proposal that has been introduced in our lifetime. But because of the radical implication it has to our society, our financial structure and the funding of our government, policymakers are understandably scared. A late grass roots effort this month to revive interest is too little, too late.
