Q: How long does it take to
transfer money from a 401(k) plan?
A: It takes longer than you would
expect. 60-90 days is common; longer if forms are not completed
properly the first time. You can help minimize the time by making sure
all paperwork requirements are complete, with notarizations and
signature guarantees where necessary and then following up by telephone
about every 10 days. Many financial firms have dedicated specialists to
help speed up the process. Ask about this at the time the transfer is
started.
