Q: I just returned from an initial meeting with a divorce attorney who estimated the cost of my divorce will be $50,000 to $60,000. I am in shock. It seems terribly unfair that if I don't come up with this money I might lose my children or my house.

A: While an increasing number of divorces do cost more than $50,000, many more are resolved at less than $10,000. To keep legal expenses in check, you might try isolating key issues and having your attorney address these first. Once these are resolved, you might find that you and your ex-spouse will be able to negotiate the remaining issues yourselves. It makes no sense to exchange the pressures of an unhappy marriage into the pressures of financial stress.
