Check your e-filing acceptance

This tax tip is simple but important. After you e-file a business or personal tax return, go back to check to see that the e-file was accepted. I know of two business e-filed returns that were not accepted this week for reasons having nothing to do with the taxpayer or preparer. I read a rumor that the gas explosion disaster in Massachusetts this past weekend affected some east coast e-filings.

If the e-file was not accepted then print and mail it with proof of delivery. If the filing deadline has passed, keep a copy of the e-file rejection and include a copy of that with the mailed tax return. This has proved useful to me to prove timely filing when the e-file reject says that a return was previously filed (when, in fact, it was not).
