Larger organizations have social media policies and in the past I’ve been active in promoting the concept of social media policies for small organizations. I’ve successfully used social media policies to manage the reputation and relationships of smaller organizations where I serve as director or communications manager.
Of course policies need to be updated from time to time. This seems like one of those times.
I’ve updated my own policies and those of related organizations to clarify that we will avoid participation in discussion about physical violence as a form of civil protest.
The practical effect is that this change will immediately begin filter down so that related web sites and group social media pages will be updated soon. For those organizations where I only have indirect influence, the change will be incorporated into quality screening processes. While I can always continue to try to be persuasive, the final option is simply to disassociate, That’s sometimesa more complicated process.
