One of the advantages of using an online tax preparer is the time savings in collecting, capturing and sending information to the tax preparer. Capturing information and sending documents to your online tax preparer electronically is easier and safer than collecting the paperwork and dropping off paper documents in person.
A tax organizer can be used to make sure that you have all the necessary information. Most clients do not use it, so there is no point in creating extra work if this step is not necessary. I will be pleased to send an organizer on request.
The easiest way to capture information is to use your cell phone camera to snap a picture. Just be sure that there is bright light and you are not moving the camera to blur the photo. Quality can also be improved by using a program specifically designed to convert cell phone photos to scanned and readable documents. iPhone and Android users have a range of great cellphone scanner apps to do this. I use Microsoft lens program that even converts the picture to text.
Another way is to use a desktop scanner to save documents to PDF format.
Images can be attached to text messages or email messages. Programs like Skype, Google+ and Facetime all have the built-in ability to transfer documents. Of course, fax is always an option. My online and fax contact information is listed here.
The most secure way to send information is to use a secure web portal that is provided by the tax preparer. This portal information and instructions on how to use it is included in my initial contact message about tax services.
The important thing is that you are in control of the process; use the method that works best for you.
In every instance, you should expect a confirmation of receipt of your documents and a response with the first draft of your tax return usually within the next 24 hours.
