My Greatest Fear

My greatest fear is that the world, and specifically the United States, is on an accelerated path of self destruction and there is little I can do to change this. A probabilistic analysis of current events, including yesterday’s ruling by the Supreme Court against the U.S. emission control plan, lead to a conclusion that we might have lost out last chance to avoid catastrophe.

In the past I’ve gained insight into addressing this fear through the concept of aging gracefully (for example, “Collapse” by Jared Diamond a decade ago) and now I’m reading “The Upside of Your Dark Side” to help learn updated coping skills.

As an environmentalist CPA, professional skepticism and probabilistic forecasting is a job requirement. The possibility is living a fulfilling life despite the mounting evidence of tragedy ahead. This is acutely on my mind today after yesterday’s SCOTUS ruling.
